Hi guys! I'm new here. If I'm posting this in the wrong section, feel free to redirect me.
Anyways, given that Red Faction: Guerrilla will not officially support mods (although these forums may be used as a means of sharing them), do you predict there will be a plethora of mods or will this game go unnoticed by the modding community? What about the quality of the mods? Would it be possible to have new destructible maps and buildings without a map editor?
I just wanted to know because I was considering getting the PC version because of the possibility of mods. I've seen the mods for GTA4 (a game that's receive a lot of attention but lacking mod support) and even that doesn't quite have any spectacular mods. Realistic Driving mod? Seriously? Where's the new maps? The skins are alright and the car spawner might take some fun outta the game.
I guess I was expecting something of Source Engine caliber. On the other hand, GeoMod 2 is an amazing, unique technology and I'm sure modders would love to take advantage of this.
So, what do you guys think? Should I wait for the PC version to come out or just buy the console version?

go buy console, the single player you can keep away from as not to ruin it for yourself, the mp is second to none at the moment bar the few map priority problems other than than its gamcocaine! As for modding etc i don't know how it will play out but at least if you have the console version you can look for points you would improove or re do etc
I'd love to make awesome mods for RF:G - but unless a level editor is released I won't be wasting my time.
Bottom line is that they've got a great platform here for modding - and they will make a huge profit from the PC version if they opened it up fully to modding and custom maps. Think of the possibilities...
But sadly, unless a level editor is released RF:G will die within the first few months (at least on the PC). I hope Volition can see this and will release a level editor. I don't care about mod tools - we wouldn't have trouble making them. The level editor is what needs to be official.

Agreed. We could have dozens and dozens of mods but we couldn't fully take advantage of GeoMod 2 unless we could build our own destructible buildings.
Since Volition has stated that they won't officially support mods, is there any possibility of them releasing a level editor? How likely would that be?
EDIT: Since Volition is trying to make money off of DLC, should that be a strong indicator that a level editor will not be provided with the game?
In general, PC gamers don't react well to payed DLC... I don't know how smart of an idea that would be.

The best mod will be respawnable buildings, or reconstructor for single player
Agreed with Goober, if RF3 is anything similar to RF1 in file types it will be modded for PC (still remember repacking .vpp files), the major difference will be a level editor. While I think it would be amazing to see a level editor with this RF, especially one on par with the fantastic editor that came with RF1 (despite its bugs), it would also be much more difficult since this game relies on more realistic physics and architecture.
Regardless, I would love to try my hand at making levels for Guerrilla. And who knows, if a lot of amazing maps came out that were on par with the original maps (like happened in RF1), then Volition could do a ton of community packs and get free money off the console gamers via DLC of community packs (although I wouldn't recommend charging too much unless they included a few maps of their own as well, since all the work would be done by the community). Something like 12 maps for $10 would surely seem worth it even if the work was done by the community, I know I would pay for it.
Just an idea.

Its not impossible that there will be a community made map editor since it has happened before with some games. The odds are the actual map editor the devs use simply allows you to modify terrain and place prefab buildings, similar to the editor used by Bethesda fro The Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3 or even Far Cry 2. Its not to hard to imagine that someone (or a group of people) could make an editor that allows you to make new maps with current prefabs/buildings.
I think the bigger issue might be if the buildings themselfs were built in a special in-house program. That might make it nearly impossible to make custom buildings without official tools. If they were built in a 3d editor like 3d Studio Max or Maya... then theres hope we might be able to make custome buildings, but even then Volition likely would have used custom plug-ins for thoes programs. Either way, without anything from Volition it might be very difficult to ever make your own buildings for the game.
Hopefully Volition changes their minds and actually gives some love to the PC community... but given how little intrest they have shown in us so far, I would think its not very likely. Hell, the PC versions suppose to come out in under two months and we have almost no information about it. Not exactlly how you treat a community you really care about wouldn't you say?

I just dont know why volition cannot support the PC modders when they really keep pc games alive. Hope someone with some skills can make some good tools, if I see that then I'll be gettin a second copy for my pc.
Under 18? GTFO! GTFO RIGHT NOW!
they have used 3dmax or maya for statics and models, and likely photoshop, terragen and other heightmap tools for terrain and textures, we just need a basic editor, export scripts and file format reader to expand this new engine to awesome frontiers, and volition would be painfully amateurish if they don't provide such basic tools just to protect some hipotetic addons
