Hello everyone,

I came across this game by recommendation of a friend. I've been looking through the features of the game, storyline, characters and such and I wonder if it is possible to play as the IDF faction rather than the Palestinian faction. Or would I be incorrect that the storyline of this game is analogous to the perspective of the peoples surrounding Israel?

As far as how the game looks, it seems to be fairly cool. But do I have to play as Red Faction? I want to play as the EDF and I would be buying it for the PC, if that would make any difference.

Ben.

More concisely, is it possible to play as the EDF?

Hello? Perhaps I should wait a few days for a reply... seems the forums are generally slow anyhow.

No it is not. And how did you manage to drag in Israel into this???

It's happening on Mars it has a prequel(two at that) that both explain what is happening.

Thank you for replying. "No it is not", referring to the possiblity to play the Earth Defense Force?

How did I manage to drag Israel into it? Mainly by reading the material of the storyline in comparison to the rhetoric used against Israel.

I saw that there are two other Red Faction games, the first one a revolt against a Wal-Mart type employer and the second one appears to be on Earth in the walkthroughs I've seen of it on YouTube. However, the story of this one did not have to be this way, but seems to employ much of the same rhetoric about occupying forces used in middle-eastern propaganda. IDK, it also has interesting naming selections such as General Roth and the acronym EDF which is one term out of three away from being Israel Defence Force. I've watched some of the walkthroughs for Guerrilla, and although it could have something in common with the IRA I think the similarities in the storyline and naming selections tend to suggest that this game may have been intended as some type of propaganda piece in itself. It would be kind of a fail if it were done for that purpose, as most people who play these games aren't going to care about the story as much as about blowing stuff up, but I think it is a possibility at least. Ruskie, I suppose you have been playing it for a while, do you see nothing in common with the media spin regarding the plight of the palestinians and the plot of this third version of the game Red Faction?

No because like most games it is a work of fiction. And frankly I don't follow world news that much. Mainly tech and civil liberties stuff.

And the first game was about the Ultor corporation exploiting the miners and then spreading some nano plague. The miners rebelled and took control along with the EDF helping them out. I haven't seen nor played nor even knew before a few weeks ago that there was a second red faction game based on earth.

And yes most people will buy this for the destruction and not really for the story. The story infact from what I was told by people is crap. I'm only starting in the dust sector in single player since I'm a slow player so no clue about how it turns out.

I don't follow world news that much either... it seems too full of propaganda, it is always exploiting people's misery, and in general it is crap... as is most of modern history. I prefer ancient through renaissance history for that reason actually, such that everything from that era that would be written has been, and the rest is a matter of textual criticism and historicity.

Ultor Corporation still sounds like Wal-Mart to me... they don't exactly release nanites upon their employees though... not yet anyway, but if it were shown by the marketing department to be to their financial advantage I wouldn't put it past them.

Sorry if I sound contrarian or argumentative, as Cicero said though, "I criticize by nature, not necessarily by finding fault".

Nothing wrong with argumentative or contrarian... but the post had a troll-ish feel to them.

Posts involving political issues will tend to have a trollish appearance, and as such it cannot be avoided. However, my goal was not to troll but to try to bring up what I thought may have been an issue, namely the use of a video game for propagation of certain sentiments. But I suppose even if they were doing so, it would be a fail as people just want to smash stuff into oblivion and the rest is secondary.

Wow, you seem like a very intellectual person Venator! Also you have a great grasp of Latin and Classic History. Can I just ask you as it's quite original, what's the thinking behind your display name, VenatorDraconum? I'm studying Latin at school atm and the name somehow seems familiar, though I can't think how.

And to answer your question, you can't play as the EDF. The narrative is solely from the insurgents' point of view.
