Hmmm will it be first or third person though?

And 80% underground? That's boring. make it a nice even split else it'll get as dull as guerrilla with always the same overhead.

Also adding an orbital space station to the mix would be nice so that you could go up there as well.

Hmm 80% of it under ground. Why. If this is a sequel why under ground? We spent almost entire Red Faction 1 Underground because the air was not survival. And what could we destroy. Isnt like there are citys under Mars. I like Geo Mod 1.0 But i like to destroy buildings. In Geo Mod 2.0. Maybe we get Geo Mod 3.0 Destory Ground and Buildings ( Doubt it.) Would we still play as Alec Mason. Need some strong character for the series.

I wont believe it unless it comes from a Reliable source.

Well I'll reserve overall judgement till we actually see the game in action and get more info directly from Volition (hopefully at E3), but I'll comment on this tiny bit of info.

First of all its a mistake to go back to a style similar to RF1 and RF2, and away from the open world gameplay of RFG. Granted this article with almost no info doesn't exactlly say thats what they are doing, but it sorta hints at it. RFG didn't do poorly becuase it was an open world game (such games are massivly popular right now)... but rather because RFG kinda sucked at everything but its destruction and was more of a destruction tech demo. For me, the destruction is enough that I STILL play RFG weekly, and likely the reason most of the hardcore fans loved the game. But to your average gamer all they see is that the story was horrible, the AI was a total joke, and the missions got boreing very fast. Not to mention that the online play, while fun, was bug riden and full of very frustrating issues. Even with is destruction, which many considered a gimmick, theres no way RFG was going to compeat with GTA or other open world games with all its issues... and thats why the game sorta bombed.

But that doesn't mean Volition should abandon its open world gameplay. Not at all. The likely reason RFG sucked at everything but its destruction was because that was the main focus of the game, and an extreamly difficult feature to pull off so thats where all the effort went. After it was finished its pretty clear the rest of the game was just tacked on to produce a sellable product. But now the destruction system is monstly in place... so Volition could actually spend time making an open world game worth playing, and not just another tech demo. If RF4 ISN"T open-world.... many of the fans the RF series picked up with RFG will view it as a step back, and not worth playing.

----

As for the whole underground thing... having not seen how they are going to do it this is yet more speculation. But it just doesn't sound like its going to play well for the destruction system RFG has. The system is in its glory in a wide open area, with many buildings... not in confined spaces without big buildings to blow up. Who knows, perhaps RF4 will have underground cities... but if it doesn't the destruction system is going to be wasted on tiny objects and small structures.

----

Again all speculation on almost no info, and I still have high hopes for RF4... but RFG had one winning hand, and thats its open world destruction. It would be a total shame for Volition to abandon that and rush something else to the table. Hopefully E3 will shed more light.

EDIT: Heres a link to an english article http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/11/next-red-faction-planned-for-march-2011/. This one say the developers uses the word "structured" to describe the game... hinting at a far more linear game, more like COD or Halo. Going back to the rest of my post I personally think that would be a huge mistake by Volition.

I don't know, in one hand it will bring more chances for a deep narrative, in the other I don't think RFG2 should loose its sandbox and 3rd person roots.

Will wait with interest to know more details.

Linear would be a HUGE mistake. I want open world destruction. I got that from RFG. If it goes back to the style of RF 1 and 2 i would be really dispointed. Geo Mod 2.0 was built on an open world aspect. Cant really destroy anything underground.

You still can have an open world game with a good story driven narrative.

Actually Red Faction's roots are in linear, FPS games. The first game was practically Total Recall on a Half-Life 1 engine, only RF was prettier, had destruction, substantially less Arnold Schwarzenegger and science (sadface) but substantially more fun and creative weapons (happyface), hammy characters like you wouldn't believe (JUST YOU AND ME, MINER!) and was, in my opinion, having played both, more fun.

As for RF4, I'm quite hopeful for it. They said it'll be "structured" - think of it this way. Compare to Assassin's Creed: The first game was straight-up open world, with a loose story to guide you from one arena to the next, much like RFG. It was awesome, for a while, until repetetiveness set in and became bland and boring. Finishing the game was more of a chore for me than anything else. Compare and contrast with Assassin's Creed 2: This game is more structured and linear, but still open-world; you're free to go wherever you like, but the intended gameplay direction has a set path through the open world, driven by a fluid narrative - rather than "Go to a city, gather information, kill some fucker" it's "Go to your next objective and see what you have to do" - there are even similar information gathering missions, like beat up events, eavesdropping, etc. but they're tied together in a linear way with a story, that makes more sense and makes it more interesting. THIS is what I think RF4 is going for; instead of being dumped in a sector with 3 story missions to complete in any order, and like, 15 side objectives, you do the story missions in a prescribed order, and the side missions are just that - side missions, that you don't have to do if you don't want to, although it is advantageous to do them (eg. in AC1 you HAD to do at least 2 side missions to continue to the assassination. In RFG you HAD to do enough side missions to lower EDF control to zero, or you could plan your own assaults on EDF strongholds, which was infinitely more fun. However, in AC2, you don't need to touch the side missions, but you get money for doing them. So, in RF4, they could have side missions that you don't have to do, but they give you salvage/mars dollars/funny money when you do).

As for it being 80% underground, this could be anywhere and for any reason - they said it takes Red Faction to a whole new place. What could it be? Another part of Mars where the surface is irradiated? Another planet? Who knows? It's wide open.

All in all, I'm still wetting my pants over this game.

Would be awesome if the released that too.

I will probably don't play RFG4 much if they go 1:st person again, loved the 3:d person.
