We have only a little more than a week to go until San Diego Comic Con opens to the public, with Red Faction: Armageddon towering over the other booths in the area due mostly in part to our giant Exo.    IGN Australia could not wait another 10 days and managed to grab some time with Senior Producer, Jim Boone, to discuss some of the changes from Guerrilla to Armageddon, and how much the Red Faction series is taking a look back at the beginning.

IGN AU: Does this new alien threat mean you're taking the game down more of a horror shooter path?

Jim Boone: That's a good question actually, and what we like to talk about is that in terms of the tone, and the vibe, it definitely has a very horrific element to it. Our thought is that if you have these creatures that you're encountering in the world and they're going through and massacring everyone, it's probably not going to look terribly pretty. It's going to have a darker tone to it. But having said that, from a gameplay standpoint it is still very firmly in the action realm. We haven't deviated at all from our roots in terms of Red Faction in that regard. Really, if anything, we've kinda come full circle, with Red Faction one, where we did have an underground setting, and we had a lot of mutants in that one. It was definitely more creature-oriented, along with humans, and the same thing is going on in Red Faction: Armageddon. You still have human enemies that you fight, but you have this otherworldly nemesis that you're also having to deal with.

Awesome Interview, I read it all twice. I'm pretty excited about it. I just hope the gameplay is really fast paced and adrenalin-rushed as Guerilla because from the E3 demo it seemed kind of slow and the AI was not doing much. But I'm guessing that's gonna change of course. And also near the end of the interview it seems like Darius is mostly the one doing all the work. I feel it would be fun with more RF members fighting alongside. Or even better, Co-op with a friend. But other than that I'm pretty excited.

Hey V, I read on the Comic Con site that Red Faction's session is going to be entirely about creating a game universe for transmedia entertainment. The guys from SyFy will be there to talk about the movie, talk about the comics and the arcade game, etc. Will there be anything new about the actual game that we can expect?

Oh, and have you guys considered making a life-size replica of the spider mech? That would definitely blow everyone out of the water, but I'm not quite sure how you'd fit it in the convention center

Spoiler: Highlight to view
all jokes obviously regarding the mech. But seriously, you should do it. Nah I'm joking again. Or am I?

I'll have more info on that particular panel later this week, along with all the RFA Comic Con info pre-show.

Why not add it to the "Help Us Help You" thread? http://community.redfaction.com/forums/topic/8410

Very dissapointed, no jetpack and apparently no hope for scenes in the surface, bye bye freedom.

Damn Red Faction I and damn nostalgia and bad idea to listen to the wrong people.

But well, fanboy life is tough, I guess I should keep faith and wait.

There are portions of the RFA on the surface, as has already been confirmed.  Nothing in this article said otherwise.

True, but no jetpacks is a real downer. Why exactly aren't jetpacks included (for both SP and MP I assume)? Boone said because it didn't work so well underground, but from the level I saw in the E3 demo it appeared the same jetpacks from RFG would work perfectly underground.

Well, maybe all the interviews are not fresh in my mind but I don't remember any official description of important sandbox style missions on the surface. In any case your words are a relief.

My theory is if they want important vertical shooter component the jetpack is a problem, but I will miss it a hell. It brought awesome variety in gameplay and challenging movements and tactics.
