If you're reading this, you've likely just bought or installed Red Faction (1) and are a little confused. Follow the steps in this short post and you will be ready to play in no time. If you do not own a copy of Red Faction and are interested in purchasing a copy of Red Faction, there are three main ways to do so.
Option 1: Find a copy on eBay. It'll only be a few dollars, but be careful of shipping costs. Link
Option 2: Find it in a pawn shop or other used games bin. Again, this should only be a few dollars, so look around.
Option 3: Buy the game on steam. Red Faction on Steam
Now that you have your copy, run the normal installation setup. Hopefully your game will run at this point. If you run into problems please read on for some help.
----- About Pure Faction Pure Faction is a third party Red Faction patch developed by TrotSkie, a community developer. Pure Faction offers a fully functional anti-cheat for competitive matches, numerous bug fixes, patches to numerous security expoits, a custom map auto-downloader and much more.
----- Downloading Pure Faction Download the latest version of Pure Faction from this website and when asked for a folder to install it to, specify your Red Faction folder. This is normally "C:\games\RedFaction\" if you have the retail version and "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\red faction\" if you have the Steam version.
----- Running Pure Faction After you've installed Pure Faction, navigate to your root Red Faction directory and run "PFLauncher.exe". After you've configured your game through the "Game Settings" tab in the Pure Faction Launcher, press the "Launch Game" button to play. You should be sure to check the "Windowed" or "Stretched" window mode to avoid DX errors when running in the default "Normal Window" mode. And that's it! Now you're playing with the latest version of Pure Faction.
If you should encounter any problems while running Pure Faction, please post on the official Pure Faction forum (here) and somebody will help you. If you have any suggestions for Pure Faction, you can also post in that forum. TrotSkie, the author of Pure Faction reads it frequently.
NOTE: Red Faction uses port 7755 UDP by default. If you are unable to contact the gametracker (master server), check any firewalls you might have.

Also might want to add this information on the bottom:
Red Faction uses port 7755 UDP by default.
If you are unable to contact the gametracker (master server), check any firewalls you might have, and if it still doesn't work, try forwarding port 18444 UDP through your router.

you dont wanna know how i make donuts...
wow, not a single disclaimer in there that mentions that Pure Faction is a 3rd party app :? ...
You don't think that makes it a bit misleading to people joining the game?
not to mention you forgot about CF ... another 3rd party app that provides new features ...
your biasedness tires me :|

It's quite simple to find this information by spending about five seconds reading the PF website.

Yup, but you and i both know that people have a tendancy to skip over things that aren't right in front of them ... (Did you know by signing up at this forum, you have legally agreed to let volition check all the data on your computer components if they suspect you of cheating? ) ...
Here's the deal, That setup guide was more than a bit biased, you know it, i know it, and i was just pointing out why :| ... im mean seriously 2/3rds of the thing is talking about how to install and use PF :? ... What about info such as alternate tracking servers? or how to install maps and or mods?
and i know you guys are going to be like "oh god, Assault is bashing PF again" but that really isn't the issue here, the issue is that this is propoganda ... and propoganda is wrong, whether its for good intentions or for bad ...

It's a SETUP guide, not a guide on how to add maps or mods. If you want a map installation guide, I'd be happy to make one, but the point of this is to let everyone know how to setup Red Faction. The only way I can be sure no one will have any weird errors or crashing problems is by telling them to use PF.
There is the possibility they wouldn't even need PF to run the game anyways ... infact, id say the majority of the people who play RF don't really need PF (or ever will need it) to play :? ... That's just outright misleading ... most people will not download something unless they need it, so you try your best to suggesting its necessary to newcomer without actually saying its necessary ...
I mean seriously, 5 various nebulamods links and 2/3 of the setup talks about Pure Faction  ... that pretty damn biased :P
This is almost as bad as watching "FOX and Friends" ...

Let's leave Fox out of this :? lol
